Renewal of a 400 kV transmission line | Sweden

The Söderåsen–Barsebäck 400 kV transmission line, originally commissioned in 1958, is being renewed by Svenska Kraftnät to ensure continued operational safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance.
  • Project duration: May 2022 – May 2025
  • Planned outage for live-line work and dismantling: 15 July 2024 – 22 September 2024
Line
While the standard service life of such a line is 85 years, the technical lifetime has been revised to 70 years due to:
  • High salt content from the coastal environment (corrosion risk)
  • Frequent storms and harsh weather in Skåne County
  • As a result, the line is being replaced ahead of schedule to secure critical power transmission infrastructure in southern Sweden.

Project Objective:

  • Construct a new 400 kV overhead transmission line between Söderåsen and Barsebäck
  • Dismantle the existing 1958-built line and fully remove:
    - Conductors (wires)
    - Towers
    - Foundations
    - Guy anchors

Route Location

The 42 km route lies in Skåne County, Sweden, crossing the municipalities of Bjuv, Svalöv, and Kävlinge. It is divided into two segments: the northern part from Pole 1 to 76, and the southern part from Pole 76 to 132.
