Glaslyn switching station – Structure 214
Victor Energy installed 36.5 km of 138 kV conductor and 182 new wooden h-frame structures with direct embed and screw bucket foundations. Crews also salvaged 36.5 km of three-phase 4/0 AWG ACSR Penguin, and 1 km of three-phase 477 ACSR Hawk conductor. 239 wood pole structures consisting of h-frames, three-pole, and vertical monopole structures were also salvaged, along with culvert foundations and screw piles.
Work started in mid-January and there were a lot of areas where the structures had to be built during frozen conditions, to accommodate water depths of 5-feet. Crews were able to build enough ice to complete all the wet areas by mid-March.
Due to lack of nearby accommodations for crews, they had to travel nearly an hour to work each day.
During foundation installation, crews ran into a lot of rock, resulting in the need to excavate 10% of the foundations.
The project was completed on time, and on budget. After the successful completion of Phase 1, crews were dialed-in and ready to take on phase two of GL7
The purpose of this project was to construct a new section of transmission line to connect Phase 1 of the GL7 line segment near Belbutte, Saskatchewan, to the Spiritwood substation.
Belbutte, Saskatchewan – Spiritwood substation
Victor Energy installed 24.2 km of 138 kV single circuit Hawk conductor with wooden h-frame structures. Phase 2 is designed for a voltage of 138 kV but will be operated at 72 kV. After the new line was constructed and energized, crews salvaged the existing GL7 line from structure 273 to structure 513A at the Spiritwood substation.
